The Organization:

Above The Rim Inc. of Newark is a §501(c)(3) non-profit community based organization established in 1990 to address the void left by the dismantling of after-school recreational programs. At Above the Rim Inc. “More than just basketball” we believe that children can be our community’s most valuable resource or its greatest problem. The outcome is determined by the investment; keeping them engaged in constructive activities that promote health, education, and positive community lifestyles will help them develop into healthy adults.

With over 10 years of dedicated service, Above The Rim Inc. has provided effective positive results. We use the most effective tools (sports and entertainment) to draw the right mix of young men, women, and caring adults, bringing the community together as a whole. Creating a family oriented event that will help build strong kids, strong families, and in the end strong communities.

KaboobThe overall mission of Above The Rim Inc. is to create innovative recreational and educational programs that provide an opportunity for at-risk youth in the city of Newark to develop their social skills as well as athletic ability. We promote fundamentals of teamwork and sportsmanship, intertwined with an awareness campaign on youth mortality, recognizing issues such as drug abuse, AIDS, and cancer.

The program was inspired by James Sedwick, affectionately known as Kaboob, a community legend who has been providing the children of Newark with basketball tournaments from the back of his truck for over 30 years. He has had a hand in the development of our areas most successful athletes, including Eric Williams and Shaquille O’Neal.
